Choosing The Perfect Wedding Suit For The Groom

This is the one thing the man should have the most say about but let’s face it, the girls will be laying down the law as to what we can and can’t have.  It’s probably a good thing, especially if you have ever seen those glorious pastel suits worn in Dumber & Dumber!!  The guys also don’t want to look like a penguin either

The first thing you need to decide is whether or not to buy or rent.  If it’s just about the money the renting will make more sense, depending on the style though your suit could be seen as an investment.  Many components of the suit could be used again and again, so you could get real value from this.  However, if you rent the suit and things get a little messy, as it can sometimes for us boys (go easy on the single malts and the jager bombs) you could be faced with a fine for not returning it in a prefect condition.

The next decision would be to decide on the kind of style that you would require.  SOme of the options you could go for include:-

Morning Jacket – This is the most formal choice.  Single breasted with a tail at the back.  The coats are usually either Black or Grey and are accompanied by a Top Hat and striped trousers.  This is the look worn by Royals most often.

Stroller Jacket – This is more casual and slightly shorter option. Looks great with a nice crisp shirt and waistcoat.

Tails – Another of the more formal styles.  The classic tail coat should be work with braces and a white shirt.  If you wanna razzle dazzle them then finish of this outfit with a rather splendid cane.

Tuxedo – Your bride is ready for you now Mr Bond!!  Lots of different colour options, usually worn with a bow tie (don’t go clip on, far too waiter like and you might get roped into our team!!)

Dark Suit – If the tux is too 007 for your liking then this might be another option.  Go for a normal skinny tie to replace the bow tie if you want to be a dedicated follower of fashion.

The next important part of this procedure is making sure it fits.  The last things you want is your groom to look like a cross between Charlie Chaplin and MC Hammer!!

Make sure that you try on all components of your outfit.  Any tailor worth his salt will advise  on the suits fit but here are a few things to look out for:-

With arms at his sides the cuffs of the shirt should peek out and the sleeve should sit comfortably at the top of his hand.

The trousers should just touch the shoe’s heel at the back and sit comfortably on the top at the front – exposed socks are a no no.

Most of all, consider all the options: try different lapels, consider a waistcoat, or even a hat.

Take the groom’s build and shape into account and finally, try to get him as involved as possible.

You only want to be doing this the once and on your anniversary when you get the wedding pics out you don’t want to be saying “what was I wearing!!”.
